A taste of Ostend’s history

Taverne James, located in the iconic Ensor Gallery — known locally as the “gloazen stroate” (the “glass street”) — has been a familiar landmark in Ostend for decades. The establishment was founded in 1944 by Mr. Ginckels, who named it after his grandson James.

After many generations and owners, a thorough renovation in 2020 breathed new life into the heart of the Gallery. The classic shrimp croquettes were joined by a refined lunchtime menu, which quickly won back a loyal clientele. At the end of 2023, the torch was passed to Nico De Greef, who, with great enthusiasm and the support of a devoted following, continues to let this legendary place flourish.
