From 13 to 17 October 2025, Ostend will become the centre of international underwater archaeology. The City by the Sea will then host IKUWA8, the leading conference that brings together archaeologists, researchers, policymakers and heritage organisations from across the globe.
IKUWA (International Congress on Underwater Archaeology) takes place every three to four years and is regarded as the key meeting place for maritime heritage research. Ostend was chosen as the host city thanks to its seaside location, rich maritime history and strong conference infrastructure.
This edition will bring together 400 participants from more than 40 countries. The programme includes lectures, workshops and excursions on themes such as shipwrecks, new research techniques and the impact of climate change.
One of the highlights is the lecture by James Delgado, the world-renowned archaeologist who explored, among other sites, the Titanic. His story will also be made accessible to the wider public in Ostend, allowing both residents and visitors to discover the world of deep-sea archaeology. In this way, the conference also builds a bridge to the local community. What’s more, this lecture is free for everyone to attend - even those not taking part in the conference are most welcome. Tickets cost just 8 euro - and include a complimentary drink after the talk.
IKUWA8 is made possible thanks to the collaboration between the IKUWA Steering Committee, the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), the Agency for Immovable Heritage, the Walloon Heritage Agency, Ghent University, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Tourism Flanders, the Province of West Flanders, the City of Ostend and Tourism Ostend.
With IKUWA8, Ostend not only hosts a prestigious conference but also strengthens its position as an international conference destination. That this conference falls within the Blue Economy is no coincidence: it confirms the conscious choice of our City by the Sea as the prime location to hold congresses in this field.
Beyond scientific exchange, the conference provides a strong economic boost. Participants stay for several days in and around Ostend, creating a direct benefit for the hospitality and hotel sectors.
The conference will take place at De Grote Post, Ostend’s former post office building, which now functions as a cultural centre but is also ideally suited as a conference venue. Its central location and the combination of modern facilities with a unique historic character make it the perfect setting for an international conference such as IKUWA8.
